The Ironies of the French Slaughter Bench

Introduction given to the London Old Hegelians, 6.10.2024

In this introduction to the London Old Hegelians I look at Hegel’s critique of the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror, as outlined in the Phenomenology of Spirit (1807).

I also examine Chris Arthur’s claim that there was in fact three Hegels, as if one was not enough to be getting on with.

Towards the end of my introduction I refer to Todd McGowan’s Emancipation After Hegel: Achieving a Contradictory Revolution (2019), which you can purchase here. In it McGowan attempts to reconstruct Hegel’s work after the left / right split and the case he puts is most interesting. His publication also provides readers who are new to Hegel with an excellent overview of his thinking.
