Hegel's Unhappy Conciousness

Introduction delivered at the London Old Hegelians, 26.11.2023

“Its thinking as such is no more than the chaotic jingling of bells, or a mist of warm incense, a musical thinking that does not get as far as the Notion, which would be the sole, immanent objective mode of thought. This infinite, pure inner feeling does indeed come into possession of its object; but this does not make its appearance in conceptual form, not as something speculatively comprehended, and it appears therefore as something alien.”

In this introduction Mick Owens explores Hegel’s concept of the stoic, sceptic and unhappy self.

He also says something of the phenomenology of reading Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit.
